Whiskey Kick

Whiskey Kick

Every June the biggest Rodeo in the west happens here in Reno. Pretty much the whole town gets involved and everyone runs “rodeo” sales and specials. I worked all 10 days and by the last night I was ready to get back to my normal routine, I was exhausted! Above the grand stands is the Jack Daniels suite which I work every year. I make a variety of drinks for our VIP customers using Jack Daniels Whiskey. For the last couple years I made this drink called a Whiskey Kick. It is like a mule but with Ancho Reyes which is a spicy liqueur. It gives the drink a spicy kick hence the name. I ran out the last two nights which left my customers so sad. It’s a crowd favorite for sure! If you like ginger beer or a little spice with lime, you will like this!

Whiskey Kick

  • Servings: 1
  • Print

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces of Jack Honey (or regular bourbon whiskey if you want to make it less sweet)
  • ½ ounce of Ancho Chile Liqueur
  • sweet and sour mix
  • Squeeze of a lime slice
  • Bitters
  • Ginger beer
  • ice

Instructions

  1. Put ice into a glass. Pour in bourbon, Ancho Reyes, a spash of sweet and sour, 3 shakes of bitters and then pour ginger beer to fill the rest of a 12 ounce glass.
  2. Squeeze a lime wedge on top and stir!

This recipe is not the healthiest, however at the Rodeo since its one week a year, people don’t worry about it. If you want to make a healthier version, make your own sweet and sour with lime and lemon juice and then add some honey. Use regular Jack or bourbon instead of Honey Jack. Ginger beer is usually filled with sugar so try and read the labels and pick one with less sugar. You can even try this with ginger Kombucha like my Ginger Kombucha Mule, however I have not done this so I am not sure how that would turn out but it’s worth a try! You can also leave this recipe as is and enjoy for a special occasion. I love it and everything in life is moderation for me, that’s the key! Enjoy!
